Spring has Arrived

Wow, what a difference a few weeks makes! Spring is in the air, flowers are blooming and the weather is great.

Trash Bash Saturday, April 24, 2021

Residents of North College Park – meet at the Pavilion in Glenville Park at 8:30 AM to do your part for Trash Bash. Just show up at 8:30 AM under the pavilion. Note: you do not have to register. NCPNA is registered as a group and we will pick up supplies. We will be picking up trash in our area.

Other activities associated with Trash Bash include:

  • Electronics recycling
  • Document shredding
  • Residential cooking oil/grease disposal
  • Book drive (books, magazines, CDs, DVDs)
  • Free bag of Texas Pure Compost or mulch
  • Collection event for Network of Community Ministries

NCPNA will, as in the past, have our own electronics drop off point. Place electronics items in the truck bed in front of 407 Palomar before 2PM on Saturday (April 24th). We will make one delivery to the recycling location with whatever is in the truck. Please just electronics, no trash or other items.

Coordinator for the neighborhood for this event is Phyllis Slaughter (Phyllis.slaughter@gmail.com).

March Madness

March Madness proved to be just as mad as ever! With a number of upsets in the first two rounds and Baylor pulling off their first ever school win, there were nail biters from start to finish. NCPNA held a free bracket and 15 members of the community joined for some fun competitiveness. Our overall winner was Janice Gromadin and she won a $50 Amazon gift card. Whether it was strategy, guessing, or just good old Baylor pride… way to go Janice!

Membership Drive Contest Results

Connie Thomas on Horizon is the winner of the drawing for New Membership. Congratulations to Connie!

Thanks for your membership in the NCPNA! Not a member? Join today!

Again, this year we are partnering with the Rotary Club to offer a discount for the five flag placements with a paid membership. There has been a little confusion in that some of you may have received a renewal notice from the Richardson Flags Project for renewal. You can still renew your NCPNA membership and get the flags at a discount. If you have already renewed with the Rotary, we will be happy to grant you this discount with your paid membership. Membership is $25, membership with the flag option is $55.

The process is easy, just go to our website and pay for your membership and if you wish to add the flag option it is only $30 more. The address is http://ncpna.org/join. You may pay online or mail a check to the address provided.

Thanks for supporting North College Park Neighborhood Association.

If you want a “booster” sign, please let Vicki Bean V.Bean@att.net know and we will get you a sign.

April/May Book Club

Our February book club was pushed to March due to the freeze, but there was a wide consensus that The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah was an incredible and heartbreaking read. We thank our member, Shannon Butterfield, for all the tears! Our next read is Negroland by Margo Jefferson and we hope to meet in person (outdoors) if the weather cooperates on Tuesday April 27th at 7:30pm. Please join us any time by emailing at adawn0105@gmail.com if you’d like to join!

Yard of the Month

Yard of the month is back! With the great weather and all the flowers in bloom, it was tough job for our volunteer judges. They have risen to the challenge and the winners are:

Runner Up, Mark and Mary McLaughlin, 1108 Sundial. They received a $25 gift certificate from Bruce Miller Nursery.

Winner, Casey Carter (pictured) and Todd Faulk, 909 Morningstar. They received a $25 gift certificate from Bruce Miller Nursery.

Looking Ahead!

We have many exciting events upcoming this year, so keep your eye on the newsletter and Facebook for updates on these events:
May Neighborhood Garage Sale
June/July Ice Cream Social
July 4th Neighborhood Event

Block Captains

North College Park has a group of volunteers who serve as block captains. Block captains help get the word out to the neighborhood and help coordinate activities. They also pass out flyers with information about upcoming events.

Small Business Spotlight

If you have a small business you want to highlight, please email April Anderson at adawn0105@gmail.com for consideration. We want to support you!

Crime Watch Report

We met with our police crime prevention officer Raul Reyes and he reported that we continue to have good results. Unlocked cars and open garages continue to be a target for criminals. Internet scams are very common and getting very sophisticated. They fool even very savvy people. Take a deep breath and check it out. Stay alert, if you see activity in the neighborhood which does not feel right, call 911. We can always use additional crime patrol volunteers, on foot or in your vehicle. Contact our crime patrol coordinator for more information. Doug Freeman at d1004free@aol.com

Act of Kindness

This month we are starting a new project to highlight acts of kindness we hear about.

Someone on Horizon found a bike against the fence in the alley behind her home. The bike looked expensive so she decided to call the police and sure enough, it had been stolen from a neighbors garage. The police came to pick up the bike and delivered it to the owner down the street!

If you hear of an “act of kindness” let us know and we will report it.

House Number Project

The city requires that all homes have clearly visible house numbers both front and back. Many homes are depending on curb lettering which have faded. This makes it difficult to identify a house for emergency services and deliveries. We encourage everyone to check and make sure the numbers are clearly visible in both the back and the front of the residence.

For several years NCPNA has volunteers who make house number signs for the rear of houses. This a free service, all you need do is to contact Doug Freeman at d1004free@aol.com to arrange for it to be installed.

Election Day May 1st

Early voting begins April 19th. There is a school bond election, city council and school board positions. You can find a sample ballot here. Please take the time to become informed about the issues and exercise your civic duty and vote.

The Network of Community Ministries

Food donations and volunteers are sorely needed to help in our community. More information

About North College Park Neighborhood Association

NCPNA is a neighborhood association and, unlike a homeowner’s association, we do not have any authority over anyone’s property. We sponsor activities and projects to help make our neighborhood a more pleasant and safe place to live. Volunteers are always needed, and we look forward to hearing about new ways to achieve our collective goals.

Contact Robert Grinsfelder at rmgrins@aol.com if you can help with any of these activities.
